ATLANTA — Between the summer of , when the Atlanta rapper Lil Baby got out of prison on drug and gun charges, and the end of , when he solidified himself as a formidable presence in hip-hop, he released seven full-length bodies of music, resulting in a pile of smash singles that have gone platinum a combined 12 times over. All told, songs by Lil Baby, who had never rapped before his two-year incarceration, have been streamed more than 11 billion times around the world. The concept of celebrity still makes him bristle, and his public appearances remain limited to the ones that pay handsomely. Balancing flash and restrained grace was something Lil Baby, born Dominique Jones, learned from his neighborhood notoriety before music, when he was known as a local hustler and dice aficionado before committing to rap for a safer income stream. After the torrent of music that certified his arrival, the rapper took last year off, in the sense that he did not release an album or mixtape, though an endless stream of guest verses and a few one-off singles kept him relevant. A sneakily intricate rapper whose lyrics are often camouflaged by disarming singsong flows and a gravelly Southern drawl, Lil Baby has largely moved on from the open wounds of his earlier, bittersweet work. But a push-and-pull between his rough-edged youth and sparkling new reality remains. On a recent weekday afternoon in the studio, he was direct and thoughtful in between fielding FaceTime calls from Gunna and his label boss; getting a haircut; and enjoying a box of Atlanta wings with a full bottle of supplemental sauce. He released his second mixtape entitled Harder Than Hard on July 18, This mixtape did not create as big an impact as two former tapes, but still garnered some attention.

Jones finally started to break through to the masses with his December mixtape Too Hard , led by his hit single "Freestyle", which was released as a music video on November 5 to promote the upcoming mixtape. Through the success of the single, Jones attracted much attention towards his mixtape.

When the mixtape finally dropped it featured the single "All of a Sudden" with featuring rapper and friend Moneybagg Yo. After he had released Harder Than Ever , he released his collaborative mixtape Drip Harder with fellow rapper and close friend, Gunna on October 5, The mixtape had several hits and bumped Baby's popularity up. The song received acclaim from music critics and peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot On January 10, , Baby released the second single, " Sum 2 Prove ", for his album, and it reached number 16 on the Hot After the commercial success of Baby's album My Turn , 12 songs off of the album reached the Billboard Hot chart, which gave him a career total of 47 songs on the chart, putting him at a tie with Prince and Paul McCartney.

The song was of a different caliber from his usual releases as it was a song "full of message" that addressed a broad issue related to the George Floyd and Black Lives Matter Protests of , and resonated with many people, African American and Caucasian. The song also debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot , becoming Lil Baby's highest-charting song. The track reached number 6 on the Hot Sometime in Jones started dating Jayda Cheaves, and on February 18, , they had a child together.

During Lil Baby's concert in Birmingham , on March 8, , gun fire popped off the side of the stage, which had Baby and much of the audience running for safety. A Twitter video surfaced that showed the incident, where two men entered the stage and appeared to be looking for a way out. Almost immediately after their entering, gun shots were heard.
